Six panel skirt - Tailor Academy

A few weeks ago I was mindlessly scrolling through Facebook as one does when they have nothing better to do. I eventually stumbled across a sponsored ad for a company called The Tailor Academy offering a free trial course all just be entering in my name and email address.

Now, one would usually be skeptical about such sponsored ads on facebook as 80% of the time they are big scams but the more I looked at the website for The Tailor Academy, I found that they offer a full tailoring masterclass completely online.

Of course, once the pattern arrived in my inbox I absolutely needed to give it a try. I printed my pattern with Officeworks, went up to spotlight and bought the most beautiful brocade fabric in a peacock feather pattern, purple thread and a matching purple 20cm zipper.

Peacock patterned brocade fabric

Of course I made the rookie error off purchasing too little of my fabric having only realised after I had cut out my pattern pieces so had to venture back out to Spotlight to buy some more.

Extra fabric purchased, I gave my fabric it’s ceremonial wash and then it was off to cutting. First lesson I learnt with this particular brocade fabric was that tailors chalk or a pen did not show up well on the fabric. Strangely enough I found a dry-erase marker in my husband’s desk drawer which worked a treat… Don’t know why he has a dry-erase marker in his drawer, we don’t event have a whiteboard at home to warrant the need for one.

Check out the time lapse below of my cutting.

Taking to the machine was definitely the most fun and rewarding part of all. I was amazed at how quickly this project came together as soon as I started sewing. Five panels in, I had completely misplaced the sixth panel and had absolutely forgotten I was making a six panel skirt so started to sew up the back joining pieces from under the zipper placement and proceeded to overlock the bottom edge of the skirt.

Thank goodness for the video tutorial, the fantastic instruction when moving onto attaching the waistband reminded me that my front notch needed to be lined up with the centre front seam which with having only sewn five panels together rather than six, said front seam was not in existence.

I thankfully found my sixth piece laying amongst the leftover fabric so proceeded to unpick my centre back seam in order to add on my sixth panel. Back on track… Waistband on | Zipper in | Waistband turned down and stitched in place | Bottom hemline ironed and sewn in place | AND DONE!

This was a truly rewarding project to sew and I can’t wait to wear it out and show it off. I would highly recommend this free trial class if you are looking for a fun and easy project to sew. With the pattern being available in multiple sizes you can make one for yourself, make one for a friend or even just make multiple for yourself. Go crazy!

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. It is great to see amazing resources being provided to the everyday sewer like myself. Now with two course to choose from, The Masterclass and Basic Sewing Course, I am considering on signing up to one of these courses.

Sound off in the comments section below. Are you going to make this six panel skirt? I’d love to know what you think of the course if you do give it a try.
